How to Get Ranked in ChatGPT (and Why It’s Already Changing the Game)

A few months ago, I was on a call with a client who said something I didn’t expect:

“We got a lead this week who said they found us on ChatGPT.”

At first, I brushed it off. But then it happened again. And again.

Turns out, they weren’t just searching Google. They were asking AI assistants where to find what they needed—and landing on businesses I had optimized.

That’s when it hit me: I had accidentally gotten my clients ranked in ChatGPT.

I Saw the Writing on the Wall Years Ago

I’ve been doing SEO for nearly 20 years, and one thing I’ve learned is that the algorithms always shift, but the principles rarely do. When AI search started gaining traction, I realized something big:

Optimizing for Google and optimizing for AI aren’t separate strategies. They’re two sides of the same coin.

ChatGPT doesn’t “crawl” the internet in real-time, but it pulls from high-authority content, brand signals, and structured information. If you’ve been building for search credibility, you’re already halfway there. And if you haven’t… now’s the time to catch up.

10 Things That Get You Ranked in AI

Here’s what I’ve observed working across dozens of clients now getting AI-driven leads:

  1. Own your niche
Be the definitive source for something. Generalists don’t win here.
  2. Answer questions, don’t just sell.
ChatGPT loves helpful content. Educational pages with natural Q&A structure perform incredibly well.
  3. Use structured data
Schema markup helps AI understand your content—and recommend it.
  4. Publish under a brand (or person) with authority
Whether it’s a personal brand like mine or a trusted company name, credibility matters.
  5. Have a presence in multiple trusted sources
Think: local directories, Wikipedia, news articles, LinkedIn. AI looks for consistent signals.
  6. Clean up your content footprint
Remove fluff. Simplify your messaging. AI pulls from clarity, not complexity.
  7. Keep your site fast and mobile-friendly
Performance is indirectly tied to how often your content is referenced by AI.
  8. Get reviews—real ones
Especially on Google, but also elsewhere. It builds trust both with users and with algorithms.
  9. Use FAQs strategically
AI tools love the structure of questions followed by direct, conversational answers.
  10. Update content with intent
Don’t just add fluff for “freshness.” Make sure updates add new insight or clarity.

The Shift Is Already Here

I didn’t set out to “rank in ChatGPT.” I was just doing what I’ve always done: help clients get found by being genuinely useful and authoritative. But now, the landscape has changed, and AI is part of the buying journey whether we like it or not.

Most businesses aren’t ready. But the ones that are? They’re getting first-mover advantage. That’s what I help with.

What is SEO, and why do I need it?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process of improving your website so it ranks higher in search engine results, making it easier for potential customers to find your business online. Without SEO, even the best-designed website can be virtually invisible to your ideal audience.
